Hebrews 13:5 says, “Keep your life free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”

Contentment. Being satisfied. Not striving for earthly gain.

I Timothy 6:6-7 says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out.”

Are our lives marked by contentment and satisfaction? Or are they marked by constant striving and reaching for the “next best thing”? Whether it’s a toddler refusing to share a toy or demanding that shiny new treat at the store, a mom chasing the next career goal at the expense of her family, the husband choosing work over family, or the young person choosing the world over church fellowship, contentment can be hard to find. A new toy, a step up the corporate ladder, a job done well, time with friends…these are not bad things in and of themselves. But are these the things we are seeking to find contentment?

God’s word is clear that lasting, fulfilling contentment can only be found in Him. In what He has given you at this moment. It reminds me of an old hymn “Moment by Moment” we used to sing often when I was a child. Daniel Whittle, who wrote the hymn, said he didn’t like the song “I Need Thee Every Hour” because he needs Him every moment!

Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine
Living with Jesus, a new life divine
Looking to Jesus til glory doth shine
Moment by moment O Lord I am Thine
Moment by moment I’m kept in His love
Moment by moment I’ve life from above
Looking to Jesus til glory doth shine
Moment by moment, O Lord I am Thine
Never a trial that He is not there
Never a burden that He doth not bear
Never a sorrow that He doth not share
Moment by moment, I’m under His care

There are a couple more verses, but what a wonderful promise! Moment by moment, He is there. He promises to never leave us or forsake us…and that is all we need to know to be content in our “right now”.
