The Centurion and his ailing servant. The paralytic and his roof-remodeling friends. Jairus and his daughter. What do they all have in common? A suffering person unable to go to Jesus.
Incurable diseases. Paralysis. Death. According to the world’s wisdom, these were all hopeless causes. As Chad shared on Sunday, the world distracts us and discourages us from praying (Eph. 2:1-2). Conventional wisdom says these people were not worth bothering Jesus with. Most people around them had already given up hope. They had even hired the mourners for Jairus’ daughter!

But the Centurion, Jairus, and the roof friends took the time and sought out the One who could help. Why? Faith! They BELIEVED he had the power to change their situation and the compassion to do something about it.

“‘But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed’…When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, ‘Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith,’” (Matt. 8:8,10 NIV).

The servant was healed because the Centurion interceded for him. Jairus’ daughter was completely dependent on her father’s plea. The paralytic could not get to Jesus on his own and required his friends’ creative construction skills.
