Why Do We Rejoice?
July 31, 2024During his preaching mission, Jesus sent disciples ahead of himself to prepare the people for his coming by proclaiming that God’s Kingdom is near. When they returned, they were filled with joy over what they had accomplished.
“The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”” (Luke 10:17)
Jesus took the opportunity to reframe their thinking.
He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:18-20)
Was it good that the 72 were able to bear fruit for God’s Kingdom? Of course. Is it good to be excited when we see God working through our lives? Yes!
But Jesus is reminding his disciples here (and us) that Satan has already been defeated. That work is already done. There are so many good and powerful things that we can accomplish through Christ and when we are called to be faithful, we for sure need to be. And we can find joy in doing the good works He has prepared for us.
But our true joy does not rest in what we can do for the Kingdom of God. It rests in the knowledge that we belong to the Kingdom of God.
Let us work joyfully for the Lord, praising Him for the work He has done for us.
